The Lutak Dock Project
Get the scoop with the new Lutak Dock E-Book
LCC has been investigating the dock issue for the past year. The results of our investigation are consolidated in the user-friendly two-part e-book available at the links below.
Book 1 and Book 2 bring readers through the history, designs, and potential risks and burdens for borough citizens and taxpayers posed by the Lutak mega-dock project. All of the information in the e-book is excerpted or summarized from technical reports, historical documents, public records, and news stories dating back more than a decade. We have added hyperlinks to make it easy for you to find more information on each topic. Much of the information has never been publicly discussed and is not widely known.
White Paper
A comprehensive white paper, prepared by Clemmer Law Office, LLC for Lynn Canal Conservation (LCC), brings to light significant risks for Haines Borough residents and taxpayers and calls for greater transparency and accountability. The risks to Borough taxpayers highlighted in the report include the potential for construction cost overruns, excessive long-term maintenance costs, lack of a viable customer base, contamination and cleanup costs, and harm to subsistence, local business, and quality of life, as well as problems with the federal RAISE grant.
LCC HAS WORKED FOR DECADES TO PROTECT THIS LANDSCAPE. WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YET, THE PROPOSED MASSIVE SULFIDE MINE KNOWN AS CONSTANTINE’S PALMER PROJECT.
If this inherently toxic mine goes into production, it will imperil the biologically unique downstream environment in the Chilkat Valley, including the largest gathering of bald eagles on earth.
The base metals Palmer Project is unnecessary, and it may not even make a profit.
A sulfide mine in the Chilkat really would be risking paradise for pennies.
You can read more about the dubious financial prospects of the project,
more about the mine project itself,
and what you can do to help prevent it.
But we'd really love it if you'd dive deeper and learn more about the incredible Chilkat Valley itself, the most biodiverse valley in all of Alaska, and a crucial corridor for living things to survive the climatic changes already underway.
